Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a form of brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation during the birth process. It can cause sensorimotor and cognitive impairments including physical and intellectual disability.

The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV/AIDS attacks cells of the immune system making the body more susceptible to infections and tumors. As a result, patients often suffer from nausea, loss of appetite, intractable pain and other secondary symptoms often associated with cancer (cachexia/wasting syndrome).

Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease and the main cause of dementia. Main common symptoms of dementia are related with memory but other cognitive processes are affected during the development of the disease.

Cav2.2 is a calcium channel of the N-type that is involved in many basal brain processes including learning and memory. Cav2.2 is not a classic cannabinoid receptor but its activity is modulated by cannabinoids. Since cannabinoids have a physiological effect on Cav2.2 it is effectively a cannabinoid receptor.
